Derek Dewsnap: Pupil 1943 - 1948

I started at Firth Park Grammar School in 1943 and was in 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A missing out the 4th year before taking the School Certificate. I stayed on until March 1948 when I left mid-term not enjoying life in the 6th Form and started in the steelworks as an office boy for a while until I could be found a place in the Research Dept. Chemistry Lab.

We  had a form master “Ben “ Bailey who I haven’t seen any reference to. He was a great teacher and took us for French. He was also interested in cricket and used to have the lads trying to bowl him out at lunchtimes.

Mr Rhodes ('Prods') took us for chemistry, our very first lesson was memorable. He came to the Lab door with a folded paper spill in his hand., told us to file in to the benches, standing at the front, the paper spluttered into flames and he lit the Bunsen burner. “We are now going to teach you chemistry ”. After that we were eager to learn (the paper had been dipped in liquid Phosphorus safely kept on the top shelf, out of our reach).

If you have any other contacts from the 3A form photo who remember me, I would love to hear from them.
