" Cross Country Reminiscences 1957-62

As a regular member of the junior and senior teams over this period, I think it worth sharing some of my thoughts on the teams' fortunes during this time.

The 1957-58 season marked the end of a highly rewarding era in the school's cross country achievements, not least through the departure of Makin and Baxter who were two of the school's finest runners bringing success not only to the school but also for the County, culminating in Makin's captaincy of Yorkshire in the Northern Counties in 1958.

There were no immediate successors, and it was the young junior team at the time, who through dedication, team spirit and talent (in varying degrees), brought the school's pride back in cross country.

Notably Steve Hudson (junior captain `57-58 and `58-59), and latterly Graham Hulley (senior captain `60-61 and `61-62) and his twin brother Roger Hulley, were key in the building of a successful senior team which, by `61-62, were performing well both in inter-schools events and the Northern Schools Cross Country Championships where Graham and Roger Hulley received Yorkshire County Badge Awards.

The appointment of Mr Pallister as the dedicated cross country coach from 1959 also greatly enhanced team spirit and confidence.

Many of the senior cross country team in the photos 1959 to 1962 gained school colours and became members of Sheffield United Harriers.

I would be interested to know how the senior and indeed the up and coming junior team fortunes faired throughout the sixties " John Presgrave
