Close-up of Staff

Anyone care to provide a list of the teachers? Here's from John to start the ball rolling:

I can't put names to the two guys between Higginbotham and Jock, but the chap between Das and Hawkesworth is Dennis Hydes, who taught English. He used to live about 100 yards from us on the Wisewood Estate and caught the same bus in the morning.

The guy between Hawkesworth and Palmer does look familiar - I think he had a red blemish on the side of his face (a port wine stain?). His name won't come to me though and I can't remember what he taught, but it must be in my memory bank somewhere (on a high shelf, methinks).

Between Palmer and Parry.....?

I don't know the bloke between Chas and Nebby either. He looks a bit fierce though, so perhaps we avoided him. I wouldn't have recognised Wheeler or Boggy if you hadn't named them though.

As for the assistant secretary (attributes and all) I remember that, in my first year, the assistant sec was called Pat Swift. We later had a wench called Marcia (who Alan Wood took quite a shine to, if I remember correctly), but this creature doesn't remind me of either of them, so who can it be?

One approach could be to try and list all the teachers' names that we can remember and see who doesn't appear on your list. Looking again now - I note you haven't included Mr Shaddock (German). Could he be the DK next to Jock?

There was a maths teacher called RG Smith (Library Wing, top corridor). Could he be the fierce looking one? I think RG had a fearsome reputation, but I was never in his class (thank God).

Things are coming back to me - the bespectacled guy between Hawkesworth and Palmer taught Chemistry. I had forgotten all about him, but I think he actually taught me at some time.

I don't see Spider McKay on there - had he left by then? A chap called Thornton replaced him, I think, but I can't remember what he looked like. Clive Beeley taught chemistry at some time or other - is he on the picture somewhere?

And from Peter Bayliss: "The picture on the final row, 2nd from left is "Fritz" Shaddock, the German teacher. Like Das Smith he moved on to Ecclesfield Grammar shortly after 1964."

And more from Mick Rawson: "Penultimate row next to Spike Johnson is Mr.Humpreys. Final row, first left, Mr.Hydes, second left Mr Shaddock (Beatty Housemaster) , the one next to Mr Wilson not sure who it is but I think his name is something like Riding/Rudding... he taught me for physics and chemistry in my first year in 1961/62."

From Steve (Nipper) Hanwell: the teacher between Chas and Nebby is Humphreys – History teacher. A little unorthodox, but brought history to life for me.
